God's people are to be marked by peace and joy in him and his salvation. Lockdown Anxiety Cases of anxiety have increased dramatically during the Coronavirus pandemic. And many people who had never experienced anxiety before, now find themselves worrying about many areas of life. Last week’s sermon, in Philippians 3, looked at the topic of Lockdown Lethargy using athletic terms. We were encouraged to get off the sofa and to keep pressing on in our Christian lives, straining towards the finishing line. • 4 Steps to Deal with Sin

    05/07/2020 Duración: 30min

Ben continues our series 'Letters from Lockdown', preaching from Philippians 3:17-4:7. In this passage Paul gives the church in Philippi practical ways to put the gospel into action in their relationships with each other. In looking at this passage I am reminded of a sermon by Pete Woodcock, in which he suddenly announced that there was one individual present, who was not welcome in the service. This caused a sensation of shock amongst the congregation, and I remember, first of all, wondering who that person could possibly be. And then I started to realise that Pete might actually be referring to me. I suddenly felt embarrassed and fearful that my inner sin was about to be exposed to the whole congregation. I am sure there were many of us at that moment, who had the same fear. As it turned out, the ‘unwelcome individual’ that Pete was referring to, was the sin of ‘Pride’ which was the subject of Pete’s sermon that morning. I...

  • Lockdown Lethargy

    28/06/2020 Duración: 34min

Pete continues our series 'Letters from Lockdown' preaching from Philippians 3:12-21. In this passage Paul compares the Christian life to a race to win the prize which is Christ. Pete explains what this might look like for us during the lockdown. Laziness begets laziness. Apathy begets apathy. How many times have we planned things such as DIY projects for the day ahead, only to wake up late, linger over breakfast, spend a few minutes looking at social media on our phone, and before we know it half the day has gone. This is the point when lethargy persuades us to think, ‘I’ve already wasted this much of the day, I can’t really be bothered anymore.’ Even when friends might suggest meeting somewhere later, lethargy answers ‘No!’ The sofa is calling us. The faithful sofa, always there to provide comfort and safety. We actually find ourselves feeling more tired after an unproductive day such as this. We all know the saying, if you...

  • The Greatest Prize

    21/06/2020 Duración: 30min

Tom continues our series 'Letters from Lockdown', focusing on verses 10 and 11 of Philippians 3. Tom unpacks the meaning of Paul's desire to 'know' Jesus, the power of his resurrection and to stand with him in his suffering and death. I’m sure many of you are familiar with the kind of conversation where another person’s name is mentioned, and you say, ‘I know of him, but I don’t know him personally’. There is a huge difference between knowing about a person and knowing that person directly. To know a person implies a relationship, and a level of intimacy. To know of a person implies a sense of distance and remoteness. To put it another way, it is the difference between just reading a book about honey, and actually tasting the honey. The former is a theoretical knowledge, whereas the latter describes the personal experience of tasting honey. When Paul says he wants to know Christ, he means that he wants a living relationship wi...
